The foreign buyer ban and B.C. ski resorts: where things stand

The federal ban is scheduled to end on January 1, 2027, and no decision on its future had been reported by late October.

What the ban covers

The federal ban on most non-Canadian buyers of residential property has caught several Interior ski areas. Per BCREA (January 2026), Sun Peaks, Apex Mountain and SilverStar are covered. Big White and Whistler are not.

When it is scheduled to end

The ban is scheduled to expire on January 1, 2027. A Vernon news report on October 26, 2026 said the Finance Minister had not decided whether to let it lapse, extend it, or replace it. I will update this page when that changes.

What I tell buyers

The ban applies to most people who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents. If you are in that group, do not plan around a lapse. Plan around the rules as they stand today. According to BCREA, Big White is outside the covered areas. I last checked all of this on October 29, 2026.
